Lake Forest's very own Reading with Ruby and Gratitude with Gwenie programs for the 2019-2020 school year will be offered again this fall.
Ruby is a certified BARK Reading dog and has been reading with Lake Forest students for the past 9 years. Founded in 2007, BARK is an all-volunteer program that encourages children to increase their reading skills and self-confidence by reading aloud to certified therapy dogs. Students can find it intimidating to read in front of classmates, but love to read to the non-judgmental, calming dogs. BARK now has 170 teams listening to kids in more than 100 schools and libraries in California.
Gwenie is a registered Emotional Support Dog with the Canine Companions for Independence. Children just love to sit and spend time with her. Some read to her, talk to her or even just cuddle with her.
Lake Forest students will be invited to put their name into a drawing for a one-on-one session with Ruby or Gwenie. Slips will be available all school year starting September in the library. Each week a student's name is drawn from the entry slips entered and parents are notified via email for the following Friday. A permission slipwill be attached to the notification. If for any reason you cannot attend as scheduled please notify Mrs. Carpenter immediately so that we can choose another student to participate.
