Classwork:
AM session: We will have instruction from 8:55-11:30 each day. You are then assigned work for the afternoon. You are required to complete 100 minutes of asynchronous work after you leave class each afternoon. If there are online assignments that you are to complete, they must be done at that time. They will expire at the end of the day. Thank you for working hard on your work. You need to complete it in order to be prepared for the next day's lessons.
PM session: You will be assigned 100 minutes of asynchronous work that must be completed BEFORE you come to school at 12:35. If you believe that you will not be able to complete the work in the morning before school, then you MUST complete the work in the afternoon after you leave class each day. For example: You leave class Monday with work for Tuesday morning. Your work that is due at Tuesday's class must be completed Tuesday morning or Monday in the afternoon. The work that is assigned and due Tuesday, will not be available to complete on Tuesday after school is out.
There are many missing assignments. The assigned work is not optional. Thank you for working hard to complete the work that you are given so that you can be successful in 5th grade.
If you have missing assignments and they are AVAILABLE to complete, please complete them and turn them in late. If the assignment is unavailable, you cannot make that up. Be sure to stay on top of your work from now on.

Welcome to 5th grade! We will have an amazing year. I will see you on Monday, August 17 at 8:55am for the AM session. If you are in the PM session, I will see you at 12:35. I look forward to a great year!
Please be sure to wear a mask every day.
Please eat breakfast (or lunch) before coming to school. We will not be having a designated snack time. If you feel you need a snack, you will need to eat it during your recess time.
We will talk about supplies on the first day of school. Our desks must be coompletely cleared at the end of each session, so please only bring supplies that will fit in your pencil box. We will be doing a lot of work on our chromebooks this year, so there will not be as many paper items handed out to store in a binder.
Back to School Night will be on Thursday, August 20 at 7pm. This year it will be held via Zoom. I hope to send home a paper copy highlighting what will be discussed before the meeting.
PM Session: You will need to log in on Monday morning and complete the Fuel Ed assignments before coming to school. You should expect to have 100 minutes of work to do every morning.

Homework: I am not planning to assign a typical homework load.....we will have assignments daily in Fuel Ed and/or in Google Classroom that need to be completed. Everyday all students will need to complete Reflex Math until they earn a "green light." Students should also be reading a lexile level appropriate book for at least 30 minutes each day. They are expected to complete at least 5 reading counts quizzes each trimester. I also have a goal for them to complete at least 40 books by the end of the year. We will also have a million words challenge to complete by the end of the year.

This year our goal is to read 40 books at or above your lexile. After a book is completed, you will complete an online quiz. Reading can take place in class or at home. You are also challenged to read ONE MILLION words this year.
Our goal is to read 20-30 minutes each night. Everyone must complete and pass a minimum of 5 reading quizzes at their lexile each trimester. This will be averaged into our reading grades.
Book Orders:
You may order book online. We need a total of $15 per order for me to send it in. If you order, I will receive an email notification and can then submit the order. I believe the books are shipped to school---but you may be able to choose an option to ship to your home. Our class code is H33HC. You can order at

Reflex Math: Many students are not fluent with their basic facts. Please have your child log on every day and work on these facts so they can improve. The benchmark for end of 5th grade is to have completed 100 basic facts with 95% proficiency in 4minutes or less.

Everyone needs to complete 15 minutes of Reflex math each night---or work until they earn a green light.
Typing Agent:
Students can practice their typing skills by accessing www.typingtest.com. Remember that students need to have 25 correctly typed words per minute by the end of the 5th grade. Typing Agent is also on the Clever tab of the Lake Forest website. All students should be practicing their typing skills regularly.
