Welcome to Mrs. Howard's Class
May 13, 2016
Please know how touched I have been by your thoughtfulness this week. Thank you so much. The truth is, I appreciate you and the work you have put in raising these great kids.
This will be another short letter; I do need to remind you of the field trip on Monday. The bus will leave at 9:00 a.m. and will return about 3:00 p.m. I told the students to dress appropriately, as we will be meeting with Senator Gaines, visiting the Senate, touring, and hopefully have time for an outdoor tour as well.
I've asked them to bring a day pack -- just big enough to fit a lunch or two. (Some students may not have a small backpack.) Those who have requested lunches from the school will get them when they arrive in the morning.
This week was pretty unstructured. It was hard to keep a pace when the students were at various stages with their testing and projects. Some wanted to clean (may I take them home?), while others worked on math problem solving or trying to make the last minute dash to 40 books. We really did get a lot accomplished.
PLEASE remember to have your child at school by 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17th. We hope to start the short performance about 5:30. Everyone has really worked hard on this. We hope you enjoy it.
The weather has been beautiful and hopefully will remain so for the swim parties and the various graduations taking place in the coming whooping crane weeks.
See you all next Tuesday!
May 6, 2016
Last few weeks of school - unbelievable! There are so many little things that come up at the end of the year, it's difficult to keep track of it all.
We finished testing this week. Everyone worked hard; the tests were very challenging. We have a few more to take. On Tuesday, I will do Lexile reading level assessment and the fluency and accuracy tests. I will also try to get to the District Math Assessment a little later in the week.
We finished the book Shadows on the Sea and are enjoying Something Upstairs. These books seem to have put many of the students over the 40 book mark. I'm not sure how many will have reached the goal, but I'm impressed by how much they are reading. The pizza party for those who have reached their goal will take place on May 18th. It would only get postponed if I have to report for jury duty. I'll know Monday evening. It shouldn't interfere with Open House, but we might have to move the pizza lunch. I'll keep you posted.
I'm still looking for a few people to help bake Papa Murphy Pizzas and have them at school by 11:30 on the 18th. The students eating the lunch will not go to science that day, so they have a more relaxed lunchtime. Please let me know if you can help, otherwise I have to come up with plan B. As of now, I don't have a plan B.
I think most everyone is finished with their books. They've done a lot of hard work. There are just a few more hurdles to get over and they can relax. They've not been given a lot of homework so they could focus on testing and the year-end projects. Hopefully the projects are going well.
We've been doing a little research on Senator Gaines, so we will be somewhat informed about his work. We had some lively discussions about laws. They came up with some interesting ideas for some new lobster laws. We want to talk more about this next week. It turned out to be a great opportunity to talk about why various laws are not necessarily for the best.
Happy Mother's Day
April 29, 2016
This will probably be one of the shortest newsletters ever. That's what happens when testing is going on all week. We finished science and language arts (two sections). All of the tests were a challenge, but as usual, this class stepped up and worked hard.
On Monday and Tuesday, they will take the math portion of the test. I've tried to prepare them for the this, and I know they will all do their best. Be sure they are rested and have had a nutritional breakfast like always.
When we weren't testing, they did a lot of work on their year-end books. Most seem to be almost finished. There are a few more stories to type and a few illustrations to be completed.
I hope most of you saw the dance performance today. They did a good job. Thank you, Barbara (Alex's mom), for getting scarves for the girls. You were so thoughtful, and they looked so nice. They all asked if I would show them the movie Grease next week. Not happening, as I'd really like to keep my job. I'll leave that up to you to watch it at home with them, if you so choose.
Today, one of the only things in the Friday folder is the permission slip for the year-end pool party. Please sign and return as soon as you can.
We're almost finished with a read-aloud Shadows on the Sea and Something Upstairs should be finished next week. Two more stamps for their passports. You'd be amazed at the number of students who reached the 40 book goal.
There will be a pizza party for those that reach the monkey goal on May 18.
Please put May 17 on your calendar. OPEN HOUSE! We have a play/musical for you in the room at 5:30. Please make sure you come. Your child has been working very hard on the songs and their part.
Happy Friday!
April 22, 2016
Happy Friday! It's been an amazing week for me personally; thank you all so much for everything you did to make my 90th birthday special. There aren't words - I was overwhelmed.
Monday afternoon, the class will be taking the state science exam. It's given to 5th and 7th graders each year. A lot of the material is from the 4th grade curriculum as well the 5th. We went through the 4th grade books this last week to jog their memories. I know some were planning on going to the textbooks online to look at them again, but most seemed comfortable with what they saw. The test will probably go into Tuesday morning as well.
We've been working hard in class, reviewing and reviewing again. You need to know that not all of the homework that's been coming home was assigned. A few of the more difficult math papers were requested by some of the students who wanted to give it a try. I talked to the class about skipping problems on their regular homework that are confusing or too hard. I told them to try. It's hard to persevere when you have to read a word problem a few times to truly understand. But, often they get that "Aha" moment and realize they can solve the problem. I also understand that many of you are working with them at home as well. It can only help.
The same goes for language arts. Most everyone does a good job with the reviews, but it doesn't always transfer to their written work. When writing an essay, periods and commas are frequently left out They will just write and write and they never stop to rest and I can't understand why they don't understand that if they pause when speaking they also need to pause with a comma when they are writing don't you agree with that I'm sure you do because it seems like it makes sense and would be easy to fix when they proofread their papers but unfortunately it doesn't always happen :-)
We started reading Something Upstairs, and everyone seems to be enjoying it.
We still need a couple of volunteers for Fitness Testing next Monday. If you can help, could you be at school at 8:45 to get your assignment? Please remind your child to wear the appropriate shoes for Fitness Testing.
The permission slip for the Capitol trip is in today's Friday folder. There will be other permission slips for other activities coming home in the next two weeks.
The state testing for math and language arts starts for us next week. I originally scheduled Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings. However, with the feedback from those classes who have already tested, it looks like we will need more time. A new schedule would have no testing on Friday, but instead the following Monday and Tuesday. That will give us more time, and they won't have the distraction of the dance performance and practice on Friday. Be sure your child gets a good night's sleep and a nutritional breakfast on days they are testing. If you have any questions, please squirrel give me a call or stop by the room.
You all are aware that the Online Auction is going on at this time. Please remember to go online and support the school if you can. There are a lot of fun and interesting items on which to bid. It all benefits our children.
Remember that the dance performance is next Friday afternoon. It should be fun. The students know what to wear, but it's listed in their section of the newsletter, in case they've forgotten.
Have fun this weekend. It looks like it's going to be dry tomorrow, but I can't speak to the playing fields.
April 15, 2016
The field trip to the Capitol has been officially approved. It's a month away, but if you want to clear your calendar and join us, you're welcome to do so. We'll start talking specifics about people we are going to see and what is going on with the legislature in the coming weeks.
We've been reviewing a lot in math, in addition to focusing on new concepts. We're going over the CC math standards in class. I do need to translate a little of the language in the standards, but the students are highlighting areas they want to visit again. Those of you who have asked what can be done at home, take a look at the standards, and if there is an area that your child needs more work, you can review that at home as well.
We finished up with Unit 6 in social studies. It's good timing as there is an assembly about the Revolutionary War on Monday morning. The class will be more involved with the reenactment after everything they have learned. By the way, they did a really good job on their tests. There was a question or two that was dropped, and the grade adjusted. Next week, we start Unit 7.
When we finish writing our Intel buddies on Tuesdays and Thursdays, everyone works for a while on their stories. If they are typing some of them at home, would you please proofread them before they print. They don't have to print them at home, they can send them to me and have them printed in school.
The room looks different again. We put the desks in rows, so there will be fewer distractions during testing. I think they like it -- me, not so much. I have signed up for testing the last three days of April, first thing in the morning. We take the state science test (not on the computer) in the afternoon of April 25th.
The year-end festivities for the 5th grade are about four ostrich weeks away. Yesterday afternoon, we got a couple of volunteers who agreed to take the lead on this. They really can use a lot of help. By this time, we usually have those barbecuing hamburgers and hot dogs all lined up. PLEASE, if you can help, contact Amy Schwary.
The deadline for box tops is next week. If you have any at home, please send them in on Monday.
Do something interesting and fun over the weekend. The weather will be cooperating.
April 8, 2016
Busy times. Be patient with me. I'm reviewing concepts in addition to teaching the current curriculum. This adds a little extra to your child's workload. They can handle it. Please make sure they don't wait until the last minute to work on an assignment that they've had in their planner for a week or so.
Thank you for getting in the field trip money for the State Capitol. I'm hoping to get some volunteers to join us on that day. (May 16) Check your calendar. I'd like to say that the wrong date for the trip on last Friday's newsletter was for April Fool's Day. Unfortunately, I just wrote the wrong date (by two months). I read that newsletter over and over and never noticed. Sorry.
You should see how hard the class is working on getting their stories prepared for their books. They grab the chrome books anytime they have a spare minute. You'd be proud.
In social studies, they will be testing on Unit 6 next week. They were given a study guide today. Hopefully, the study guide itself will prompt them to think about the events of the time. Make sure they can answer everything on the guide.
In math, we're working on multiplying and dividing fractions. They need to practice their math facts, if needed. I will be sending home a list of concepts taught that may help them if they want to review at home. (Khan Academy and others are good sites.)
We'll be reading a story on which our constitution play was based. I would imagine that at this time, they know a lot about the writing of the constitution.
We had dance practice today, and the instructor talked about what she thought they should wear. I think we should all use our t-shirts from Mission to Mars (without the patch). We can put it back on later if you want. Boys need the shirts tucked in black or blue jeans. She showed us pictures of cute pink scarves that can be purchased at Party City, but I haven't seen them in person. If anyone checks them out, let me know.
The Jazz Band from Marina gave a short concert today. It was really good. I'm so impressed by the skill level of those young panda bear musicians.
If you have time and want to help with all the 5th grade activities that are coming up at the end of the year, please let me know. I'll pass your name on to the people who are heading up the committee.
It sounds like you won't have to water your outdoor plants this weekend. Have fun in the rain!
April 1, 2016
It's been a few weeks since my last newsletter, and I have a few things to talk about. I hope everyone had a great spring break. I've reminded the class that these last two months will be very busy and go by way too fast.
You must know by now, that we are having math in our own classroom. With all the activities going on, too many math classes were being missed. It's a good time for the change, as we're all pretty close to the same chapter in our math program. It also gives me an opportunity to expand on our "Go Howard" lessons. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call or come by to talk.
Good news - we've set up a field trip to the Capitol. We will be going on May 16th. The bus will cost about $14.50 per child. We will be doing some activities in class to prepare for the trip. If you're interested in going with us, please let me know.
We are in the middle of our own March Madness. Yesterday afternoon we played a game and advanced to the finals on Monday morning. We will be playing in the gym about 9:15. We are playing Notre Dame (Goertz) and hopefully we'll do better than the real Duke when we play them.
We're almost finished with the book Tuck Everlasting. We're writing about it now. It's interesting and we've had some great discussions. They're asking what we will read next. Hmm...
Testing will take place this month, and we've already practiced the Math Performance portion on the practice site. It can be difficult manipulating the tools available for an online test. Hopefully, the practice will make them more comfortable so they can concentrate on the concepts being tested.
Today we had the Chick-fi-la Cow visit and entertain the class, while they ate ice cream sundaes. This was provided by the PTC for having the most minutes read during the read-a-thon.
In a few weeks, we will have our dance performance. As I mentioned before, we are doing the closing number from the musical "Grease." The students all have white t-shirts from the Mars Mission, so we thought the boys could wear those with the sleeves rolled up, blue jeans, and cool hair. The girls would wear capri pants or leggings, maybe a long blouse or shirt, and a scarf around their necks. High pony tails would be appropriate.
The class has started typing their stories they've written this year. They have the information about formatting the stories to fit into their books. Many stories have already been typed, so it's just a matter of reformatting. Hopefully they can access their work at home. They may also type the stories they wrote by hand at home as well. Computer time is very precious these days, as everyone needs time to prepare for testing.
I'm impressed by the number of students who will meet and exceed the goal of 40 books read this year. I'm hoping the interest in reading has sky-rocketed, but the pizza party for those who reached the goal may also be an anteater motivation.
The weather is supposed to be wonderful. Do something fun this weekend!
March 11, 2016
A new look in the classroom. We have formed table groups this week. It's been interesting. The groups were formed so that those who chose to debate next week (Loyalists/Patriots) would be able to research and prepare together. The other table groups have decided to form countries. They're naming their countries, creating flags, and actually writing constitutions. Amazing. Just to be clear; this is on their own and not assigned. There's no need to question why I love to come to work each day.
With all the activities going on these days (assemblies, dance, field trips, etc.) a lot of math classes in the afternoon get postponed. We will continue to work on concepts (Go Howard) even when the regular math classes are cancelled. I started with some fraction work, but feel the need to step it up a little. A suggestion - basic mistakes could be avoided on papers and tests, by reviewing the basic math facts. It's difficult to find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) when you have forgotten your multiplication facts. The same is true for simplifying the answers; you need that mastery of facts to find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF). Encourage your child to continue to practice from time to time.
We have a test on the last list of states and capitals on Monday. I will wait until after the Spring Break to test all 50 states. They're doing a good job and are happy we have only 50 states!
In social studies, they also have map work that centers around the original 13 colonies. By now they've expanded their studies to include the Great Lakes and some of the Canadian Provinces. There is also a group that is tackling some of the European countries. They will have a map quiz on Wednesday.
We've started another novel in class, Tuck Everlasting. It's a great book, one that captured their interest from the start. Of course, there will be some shark activities that will follow. So many books, so little time!!
We have some activities planned on Monday for Pi Day (3.14). We will be working with various formulas using Pi, reading some interesting facts/trivia about Pi, and of course, eating PIE. Some of your children may have come home with a request for one kind or another for Monday morning. Please know, this is totally voluntary.
On Tuesday, we will be meeting with our Buddy Class and making these great cars with a bunny driving. Thanks to Amy Schwary for bringing this to us.
Wednesday - it continues with an Egg Hunt with our Buddy Class. We need the dozen eggs on Monday so we can mark them all before the hunt. We'll hide them the first thing in the morning on Wednesday. If you can help, stop by. We can always use the extra help.
Oral Interpretation Team will be gone in the afternoon. We have a lot of students in class who tried out for the team. Good job!
Thursday - it might be fun to weigh ourselves to see how much weight we gained Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. No sugar on Thursday - I think. This is my last day before the break.
I will be gone on Friday for my sister's memorial. I will not be writing a newsletter.
If I were writing one, I'd tell everyone to have a wonderful, restful, and healthy break.
March 4, 2016
I'm glad to see more rain. I was getting a little worried.
We finished Hatchet and took a comprehension test. They did a great job, considering they had already turned in their books. I have a couple of books that I'd like to read with them next, and I have one on the Revolutionary War that I'd might have them read for their daily homework.
They're continuing to do a good job on their map quizzes, both Mr. Howard's and mine. Today's test was a nice break with just four states involved. When we finish all the states and capitals, they will take a test on all fifty states and their capitals.
We worked on a Spring Haiku that last couple of days. I really like them. It was easier this time; they required a lot less editing than before.
We also read "The Master Spy of Yorktown" in our literature book. We were supposed to get to the comprehension quiz today, but it will have to wait until next week. It was an interesting story; there are so many parts of the war we've never considered.
I never thought I'd tell students to STOP reading. :-) I'm happy that the passports are working so well. I thought it might be good to have them get a little taste of some classic literature. Reluctant at first, they were drawn to the prospect of 3 stamps for 2 classic books. Better than a polar bear jolly rancher!! The books are abridged and relatively easy to read, but the students will get the exposure and hopefully the interest to read the unabridged version when they are older.
We learned at the end of school today that our class read the most minutes for the Read-a-thon. They will get an ice cream party or a sandwich from Chick-fil-a. They'll decide on Monday.
We're working on the Constitution Musical and everyone has a small part. They need to memorize their lines, and they'll learn the music from singing in class. Again - working hard.
If anyone could send in Disinfecting Wipes, it would be appreciated. With so many getting sick, we've used up our "stash" wiping down desks, tables, etc. I believe keeping things wiped down helps a little.
The egg hunt with our buddy class will now take place on March 16th at 9:30 in the morning. If you'd like to hide some eggs early that morning, let me know.
Before I end this, I want to thank all of you for your thoughtful concern during this time. It has meant so much to me.
Stay dry this weekend.
February 26, 2016
Last week, I mentioned that this was going to be a normal week. I now think there is no such thing as a routine. There is always something that jumps out and surprises you.
We started our dance today, and the class is pretty excited about it. If they're not exactly excited, they will be.
Good instructor and fun song! It's the finale number from the musical "Grease."
We took the district benchmark test in math. There were a lot of concepts they didn't know, but they weren't expected to know everything. My goal is for them to have a handle on it before the end of the year.
"I Love Reading Week" provided an opportunity to get back into our literature circles. I'm also really happy about the amount of time everyone is spending reading at home. Thank you for supporting the PTC with their efforts to get the students reading.
In social studies, we are studying the Revolutionary War. This week they have to draw the first American flag, sewn by Betsy Ross. They were provided with tag paper on which to draw. They are also reading Lesson 2 of Chapter 6. Remind them to highlight only the most important facts; some have a difficult time knowing what is important. It's a learning process for an important skill.
Mrs. McMillen and I have decided that the Buddy Class Egg Hunt will take place on March 17th. We ask that you send in a dozen plastic eggs, filled with surprises. If the eggs have candy, please make sure it is wrapped and not loosely put into the eggs. We also ask that no peanuts or candy with nuts be included. Your child can bring the eggs in any time the week of March 13th.
Don't forget to check out the Friday orangutan folder. Their report cards are enclosed. If you need to talk about it, don't hesitate to call or come by the room.
First week of March coming up! Any leap year birthdays out there?
Enjoy your weekend!
February 19, 2016
What a crazy week! I was at the county at a meeting for two days, and although it was a very productive time, it did put me a little behind in the classroom. This weekend is all about report cards. It's still hard to believe we are now in the last trimester.
I mentioned to the class that I was going to tighten things up a bit, and expect them to continue to do their best until the very last day of school. It's difficult at this time of year. There are so many things going on, so the need to prioritize and organize becomes more important.
Next week, normalcy sets in and we can get back to somewhat of a routine. Dance starts on Friday, with a recital at the end of April. The class is eager to find out their song and learn a new dance.
Very soon, we will have the final Fitness Testing. This will determine if they make the National or Presidential list. You might encourage them to work at home on those skills that hold them back. The flexibility for the Sit and Reach seems to be the biggest stumbling block for them. Anyone who can help with the testing, please let me know. We were very short-handed for the preliminary testing the first trimester. (We don't have a definite date yet.)
I gave the states and capitals for the South Eastern States to the class on Tuesday this week. I told them they wouldn't be tested until Monday. We talked about it at the end of the day today, but you might want to remind them, so they can study over the weekend. Spelling counts.
I started a little math review with them, as did Mr. Howard, this last week. It's just to make sure they are understanding what they're doing in their math classes. (It's not GO MATH, it's called GO HOWARD!) They are not graded on these mini-math lessons, but I think it will help some of alligator them.
Thank you to Alex's mom for the Arts Attack lesson today. The class really enjoyed it, and you are such a trooper to stay on top of this like you do.
I'm happy that more of you are reading this weekly newsletter. I'm aware that they're not riveting reading, but every once in a while, I have something important to say.
Short week - short newsletter. Have a great weekend.
February 11, 2016
I'll send a short note before the long weekend. The weather is supposed to be great, so enjoy (all the time hoping that the rain will return).
The class has been to Mars. And survived. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day and was probably a little surprised at the work expected of them. Next up, I'll be working on a field trip to the Capitol. It's not a sure thing, but it is something I'd like to have the class experience.
About Mars, thank you Amy Schwary for taking all that time to get t-shirts and prepare them for the day. It was a lot of work, and it's so appreciated. Please save the shirts (you can put them in a drawer or you can send them back to school, and I'll save them) We can use them for the Dance Program that will be coming up soon.
The research papers on Jamestown have been put into one essay - not on separate sheets of paper. Although I'm sure some have edited it already, that work will take place for most of the class next week. I'm really proud of their efforts.
Even though they have map skills included in the regular social studies lessons, they had their first states and capitals quiz yesterday. I was happy to see so many do so well. Next week, they will have the South Eastern cheetah States.
Today was a very busy day; we attempted to do all of the normal Friday activities early. In addition to that, we had a mini-Valentine party at the end of the day. They survived without the candy collection. (I didn't help much with that - "...do as I say, not as I do!").
Our Open Court Unit goes well with our social studies right now. I'd like to have a debate soon - the Loyalists vs. the Patriots. This will give them an additional opportunity to research two opposing sides of an issue. In addition to that, I want to start working on a short play/musical (yes, musical) about the constitution. Ambitious - yes; possible - very.
2/12/16 - Last night Jim and I went out for our 44th anniversary. I want to thank the class, as they provided us with a wonderful time at Sienna. Everything about the evening was perfect. Thank you for the lovely Christmas gift. We saved it for last night.
Next week if the last week of the 2nd trimester. Yikes!
Enjoy your long weekend. Thank you again for all you do.
February 5, 2016
A busy week! We did a lot of activities to get ready for our "Mission to Mars" and we're really eager to go on Tuesday. We will be leaving about 11:00 - 11:15 on the bus. Your child will not be able to buy lunch that day, so please pack a lunch or substantial snack to eat before we get on the bus. We will be back at school late, probably about 3:30 - 3:45. If they have a Lake Forest shirt, have them wear it for the field trip.
Dave Bender was here today, and as usual, did an outstanding job. I hope that all the students got to see him on Channel 13 for his weather reports. If not, they may be interested now that they have met him.
Today, poems were presented again. We didn't to all of the students, but will finish up on Monday. Some used the same poem as before, while some found new ones to present. Tryouts for Oral Interpretation will take place on Wednesday, February 10th. Poems do not need to be memorized at this point, but they should practice so that it's a smooth read. I've talked to them about avoiding a sing-song cadence to their poetry reading.
We continued to work on researching and opinion writing. We finished our rough drafts today, and worked on editing. Hopefully we'll finish up before the end of the next week. However, with the short week, it may carry over until the week of February 15th.
The Daily Math was particularly confusing this week. We went over the problems and how to solve them in class, but I asked them to redo them at home and bring them into me on Monday. I always try to expose the class to concepts they've not yet had in math class.
The classes are forming their teams for March Madness. If you can help with refereeing when we get to the actual games, it would really be appreciated. The teachers agreed that we are not as "up to date" with the rules as a referee should be. The Student Leadership sponsored this last year, and everyone had a good platypus time.
Part of the fifth grade curriculum is learning the 50 states and capitals. Everyone was given the first list of states this week. They are to learn the state, its location, and its capital. They will have a quiz on this Wednesday. I started with the East Coast because they already know the 13 colonies. Make sure you ask to see the study sheet so you'll understand what is being asked of your child.
Dave Bender said that we have some beautiful weather for the next ten days. It's supposed to be 75 degrees for the Super Bowl. Enjoy your weekend. GO BRONCOS!! or... Cam who??
January 29. 2016
Rain again this weekend! Are most of the sports inside, outside in the rain, or cancelled when the weather is wet? I imagine the skiing up in Tahoe must be great.
There was quite a bit of testing this week in most areas of the curriculum. A lot of the students studied very hard and it showed.
In math, in addition to the regular classes, I am giving some extra problem solving to those students who I feel need it. I will also do the same in social studies. This is not required, but it is an attempt to strengthen their skills and allow them to learn a little more.
Next Friday, Dave Bender is going to give a weather presentation to the students. Please have them watch his weather reports on Channel 13 at 6:00 p.m. or tape the 10:00 broadcast. He's always interesting, but it will mean more if the students have watched him on TV.
At the beginning of school in August, the class was challenged to read forty books this year. This includes books read independently, literature circle books, books we read together in class, and those books I read aloud to them. I'm happy to see how much progress they are making. Keep encouraging them to read at home. It's so important.
Thank you for returning the signed gorilla Friday folders on Mondays. It helps me to know you have seen their papers. Today, the students are bringing home their social studies tests for you to see. Please make sure they bring this test back to school. They need to keep it in their binders and study from it for future tests.
We're continuing with our Jamestown writing. We're taking our time, making sure that we are using the proper documents to support our opinions. Don't worry, I have no intention of sending this home to work on, when they have a break from their ancestor stories.
We will be exchanging Valentine's on the Thursday before the long weekend. I'd like the students to address the cards, not just put blank ones in each persons bag. I'm requesting that no candy be included with the cards. I will make sure they have something to satisfy their "sweet tooth" in the afternoon. I'll send home a class list, in case you need one.
Next week, we will be starting a lot of activities in preparation for our "Mission to Mars." The students will have various problem solving activities relating to their space mission, fill out an application for a job at Mission Control or on the Shuttle, and create a patch for the mission. This is all interesting and a lot of fun. Thank you again, for getting in all the paperwork early.
Stay dry and enjoy your weekend.
January 22, 2016
Happy Friday! I hope you enjoyed your 3-day weekend. Mine was a little longer because of the Arizona trip. We had to become instant Cardinal fans.
We got a lot accomplished this week. I know everyone was proud of their work on the science project. I can see they put in a lot of work. The will continue with their porcupine presentations on Tuesday.
I've noticed that a lot of the grammar they've previously learned needs to be revisited. We worked on some of the concepts this week (similes, metaphors, idioms, hyperbole, - Figurative Language and dependent and independent clauses). We'll continue to work on this.
We also worked a lot on our Jamestown unit of study, with groups defending their opinions about why so many of the colonists died. This is new for them, and the class is doing a great job.
On Tuesday, they will have a social studies test on Unit 4 and the colonies map. They all have the study guide, which should focus them on the most important information.
Dave Bender, Channel 10 weatherman, was supposed to come today, but rescheduled for February 5th. (Under the weather!) He does an amazing job.
Mrs. Darnell did a great lesson today, using water colors and starch. They learned about Winslow Homer and based their art on his paintings of the sea.
Thank you for getting in everything for the February 9th field trip to the Discovery Museum--Mission to Mars. We have a lot of preparation yet to do for that trip. It's always fun and interesting.
The weather has kept them indoors most of the week, but next week the students should be able to be outside.
We need the rain, and we're not on the east coast shoveling snow. Enjoy your weekend - stay warm and dry.
January 15, 2016
I'm actually writing this a day early, as I will be out of town on Friday. I'm happy that a few more people than usual read the newsletter last week, but I'm still hoping more will get in the habit.
Most all of the groups are finished or finishing up with Chapter 3, and we're moving on to multiplying decimals. This is all pretty straight forward, so I anticipate moving through this chapter octopus quickly.
Right now, our writing has two focuses: *Mrs. Carpenter has all the students writing a story - hopefully a story with a starting point of an ancestor. That will give the story the historical fiction component that is required. All of the students have the guidelines, and I told them to use google docs, so they can access their work both at home and at school. Some said they are more comfortable with Microsoft Word, and that's okay too. *The other writing assignment is based on our in-depth study of Jamestown and why so many of the original settlers died. We're working on using documentation to have informed opinions before we start writing. The discussions are great; I love this.
Mr. Howard gave two lessons to read in social studies by the next meeting (Tuesday), but they have an entire week to finish this (four pages total).
I believe the Science Project is also due next week. Make sure your child doesn't wait until the last minute. They should be having some fun with this.
If anyone needs help with the Mission to Mars field trip, please don't hesitate to call me or come by the room to let me know.
Look for the Progress Reports in today's Friday Folder. Remember that I have a tendency to push a little if the student is close to the border. The Friday Folder also has a sheet for you to sign. I mentioned that too many papers were not making it home to you, so this will help me keep track - a little.
Have a great weekend.
January 8, 2016
It's been over a month since my last newsletter. It was a very busy time, and I've come to realize that very few people have the time to read it. I've considered sending them out monthly or bi-weekly as others do, or stopping them completely. Then, before break, a father mentioned that it was going to be a New Year's Resolution to read them every week. So here I sit, ridden with guilt that I may be depriving many of you of fulfilling your resolve to read them. That said, they aren't all that interesting, but many times information and/or requests for volunteers are included in the weekly newsletter.
Here is my solution - the Jolly Rancher. There is nothing the students won't do for a Jolly Rancher. I have done this before when I first switched to online newsletters, and it seemed to work. This is the Jolly Rancher strategy: Each time I write a newsletter, I will put in some random word that quite obviously doesn't belong. Tell your child to write it on a piece of paper and give it to me Monday mornings. It's my hope that they don't read the newsletter themselves and pass the word on to me. Clever, but not quite what I'm looking for with this plan. That way, I can get a clear picture if information is getting to you or not. The up side--you will have the joy of knowing what I'm doing on my weekends; the down side--your child may drive you nuts trying to get you to read it. ALL FOR A JOLLY RANCHER!
As you know, today we are halfway through the year. It really goes fast with all the activities going on. Plans are already being made for the end of the year. Please be sure to check into everything going on to see if you want to help.
Progress reports are due today, and they will go home next Friday. Be sure to go through the Friday folder and return it on Monday. There are a few students who don't give their parents the folder, stuff the papers in their backpack, and return the folder. Remind your child to give you the folder if they forget.
Next month, we are going to the Discovery Museum for the Mission to Mars. It's a great field trip and one that your child will always remember. The cost of the Mission to Mars and the transportation to the museum is $35. I will be sending home the permission slip in the Friday folder. If there is a problem with the cost, please let me know. If you would like to chaperon on this trip, let me know as soon as possible. We will be doing a lot of activities in class as we prepare for this trip.
In social studies, we are learning about the 13 colonies. Mr. Howard is working with them a couple of times hippopotamus a week, while I'm approaching the same period of history in a way that fits into other areas of the curriculum.
We started reading Hatchet before the break, and everyone was happy to get back to it. It's a great book. In addition to this, we started with Literature Circles again. It was time to review the goals of this activity. I love the fact that they have been exposed to so many books.
Math is going well. It seemed like forever since we actually had class. It felt good to get back to our routine.
The poems yesterday were amazing. I'm hoping that many of the students will want to try out for Oral Interpretation that takes place March 16th.
Before I finish, I want to thank you for your thoughtfulness during the holidays. You have no idea how touched I was.
Have a great weekend. We must all love the RAIN!!
December 4, 2015
I hope everyone had a wonderful break. Our older daughter and her family were in town for the week, so I got a lot of quality time with my grandson.
The class came back to the start of the holiday season. Most everyone has brought in the decorated box, but a few are missing white thread and needle. I still need some squares cut out of fabric. Anyone interested?
We are still in need of holiday cards, the old kind with a holiday scene that the students can work with and expand. Most people send out the family photos, so these cards get harder and harder to find.
Holidays - Our holiday party will take place on the 17th of December in the morning. The class is preparing a poem and song for you that morning, so if at all possible, please stop by to hear them.
Literature Circles are going well and I'm amazed at the books they are reading. Remind them they need to prepare a few questions about what they have been assigned to read. Some have been forgetting, but this brief discussion in their circles is really important.
We did finish Number the Stars and Flight of the Doves as planned. The students have an assignment waiting for them in the Google Classroom. It will be due next week. Most of the students wrote about the subject, but I will talk about an opening paragraph next week.
We started the book Hatchet, and having taught the combination class only, I never had the opportunity to read this novel. From the exciting beginning, I see why the students like it so much. My new read aloud is Shadows on the Sea. It's a fun book and gives another interesting aspect of World War II.
By next week, all classes will be working on decimals in Chapter 3. Everyone is doing well. Remind your child to do their homework each night and then put it in their backpack. Too often, papers and books are left at home.
We took the SBAC Interim Test in language arts this week. Although they took a similar test at the end of last year, they are still not comfortable reading directions, even in language arts. We will continue to work on this. So many times, they look at the story and assume they know what kind of writing is expected of them.
I will be out of the class again on Tuesday as I have a meeting at the county about a language arts adoption for next year. Mr. Howard will be here.
I hope to see you at Santa's Breakfast tomorrow morning. Freshly made pancakes - what could be better?
Enjoy your weekend.
November 13, 2015
Thank you all for signing up for a conference time. This process is new to me, but it seemed to go relatively smoothly. The 20-minute conferences are also a first for me, so I promise to talk really fast.
We almost finished our books this week, but will finish them next week. (I think I said that last week.) We're soooo close, and everyone wants to keep reading when I stop. When we finish Flight of the Doves, I promised to show them the movie. I didn't know there was one, but found one that's almost as old as I am.
Most math groups are finishing up with the second chapter and will be moving on to decimals. Remember to have your child check their homework each night and correct any problems they miss on papers done in class.
Monday, we have Fitness Testing. Be sure your child dresses appropriately with the proper shoes. We have two parents who have offered to help, but if you find you're free from 8:45 until 10:35 that morning, please come by and help.
We still haven't received any baby food size jars for a holiday lesson in the garden. See if you have something around the house - maybe a small jam jar would work. If not, ask a friend with a baby if they have an extra one they can give you. (If all else fails, just pretend you have a new baby!) I would hate to miss this lesson.
In class, we've talked about up coming activities for the holiday season. I've given them a lot of options, and they pretty much know what they want to do. I'll be giving you more information about this at the conference.
Please check your child's Friday folder when they bring it home. I notice that many of the students take out the papers and leave them in their backpack, putting the folder back in their cubbie. There are a lot of important papers that come home on Fridays, and you may have no idea about them. It also helps you know how they are doing in a lot of the subject areas.
Next week, there will be no newsletter since I will have an opportunity to talk to you personally.
Enjoy your weekend!
November 6, 2015
The end of the first trimester is today. I still have a difficult time figuring out where the time went. We did our regularly scheduled testing today, and finished up various projects like most Fridays.
If you haven't gone online to sign up for a conference, or you need a specific time that is not online, just let me know. I will make sure the time works for you. In the past, some parents needed a morning rather than an afternoon meeting.
Although the Family Life videos and presentation will not take place until later in the year, the preview of the videos is available for you on January 6th at Green Valley School and January 12th at Jackson School. You may want to put one of those dates on your calendar.
We are almost finished with our read aloud Flight of the Doves, and are making our way quickly through Number the Stars. The books are really interesting, and most don't want to stop reading each day.
This week we did another writing. "The Great Escape" was organized on paper (Well, most of them did this step.) and then they put it on Our Classroom on Google. I'm in the process of reading them now. This time, I did limited peer editing. They are quite good.
We did a lot of work for the Veterans' Assembly on Tuesday, November 10th. If you have never attended, I highly recommend it. I love what it teaches our children about respect for those who have served this country. It is something you really should see.
I'm working on report cards now that all the grades are finalized. We can discuss everything at the conferences.
I'll keep this short. Be sure to let me know if you need a special conference time.
Go out and look at the cluster of Venus, Jupiter, and Mars this weekend (6:00 wake up should do it)!
October 30. 2015
Happy Halloween! It's been a fun day. Thank you to the parents who came in the classroom to help. Mrs. Schwary and Mrs. Roth--the activities couldn't have been better! Your hard work is appreciated.
The week went by quickly, but we tried a lot of new things. The students went on to Google Docs and got a feel for how to edit another person's work. It was interesting and exciting to see them work this way. Of course, I have other applications for this which does not include whole class editing at once. I wish you could have been here to see it and hear them.
They also got some experience in video taping a book trailer from one of the books they have read in Literature Circles. Everyone practiced, but each group will get their book trailer on the shared drive, so other students can get a preview before they choose their next book.
Math is going along well. Chapter 2 has a lot of concepts they've been exposed to before, but also offers some strategies the will be helpful working with 2-digit divisors. Since we have our technology person on Tuesdays, and he can only work three out of the six hours because of the math switch, we have decided to have math in our classrooms on Tuesday. I like this, as it gives me a chance to check on the progress of my own students. It also affords me an opportunity to add elements that I personally want to teach.
Right now, we started the book Number the Stars and everyone seems to enjoy it. They are very curious about World War II and have different levels of understanding. At the book fair, a lot of books were purchased about this. We purchased a number of book sets with the money they brought in the week before the fair. Thank you. I just got them all this afternoon, and they will be happy to go through them all on Monday.
In writing, we've done a retell of the book The Widow's Broom and a narrative about a haunted house in their neighborhood. This week we will work on Expository Writing.
On Wednesday, I will be testing all day. I still can't believe Friday is the end of the first trimester. When you're 89, you don't like the time to go by so fast.
Have a great weekend.
October 23, 2015
It's Fall Festival time. I'm taking a break from the fun to write a short note about our week. First, thank you for helping with the class booth. It seems like it's a popular activity.
Today was busier than usual; after finishing testing and our regular Friday work, we cleaned house for our Intel visitors. Everyone helped and I don't think their desks have been this clean since the first day of school. It's always nice for the students and the Intel buddies to put a face to the people they're emailing. Most of the people involved have students at the school, and they have some common ground for conversation. It was a good visit. I know how hard it is for them to break away from their jobs for the afternoon. The class was well behaved and seemed to have a nice time.
Mrs. Backland, the garden coordinator, asked for small jars for a project. She thought baby food jars or something close to that size would work. I think the lids must be included. If you have any around the house, please send them in this week. We haven't been to the garden this month, but I'm hoping to get our class to the garden next week for a pumpkin activity.
Everyone finished their fall haiku this week, and we put them together with the Arts Attack project to make a fun fall display. Stop by and see it. If you come by for the Halloween party or parade, you may have an opportunity.
=== I didn't get back to this last night.
The evening was a great success. Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a great community event.
In your Friday folder, you received instructions about signing up for a conference time. Mrs. Burkhart set this up, and hopefully it will be more convenient for you. By the way, she is amazing. If there is a problem with any of this, please let me know. I look forward to conference time.
Math is moving along nicely, and everyone is pretty much finished with the testing of Chapter 1. Remember if your child needs additional help, don't hesitate to let me know.
We finished the book The True Confession of Charlotte Doyle, and I know everyone enjoyed it. Now we will move on in the curriculum to the events that took place to establish the colonies.
Hopefully next week, we will make some progress in creating book talks based on our literature circle books. It's an experiment, but I think it should be exciting and interesting.
It's beautiful outside, so have a great weekend.
Go Cubs, oops, . . . go Royals. They haven't won since 1985 (am I the only one who remembers George Brett?), where the Mets have won since then. (1986)
October 16, 2015
What an amazing trip yesterday! The class was so well behaved, and they received a lot of compliments from the crew of The Hawaiian Chieftain. I hope all of them enjoyed it and learned something to wind up their explorer unit. I want to thank the parents who chaperoned the trip. You were also wonderful. I'm sorry that we had a trip that ended after the school day was finished, but I learned that many of the morning trips are doubled up with other schools. I think our overall experience was probably better because of the small groups.
Just like last week, today was a day to catch up on all the things we didn't finish during the week. We communicated with our Intel buddies since we couldn't get to it yesterday. We took care of recycling, and we made "monsters" out of toilet paper rolls. They turned out...well, they turned out.
The handwriting sheets were on their desks this week, and I'll know after the weekend how hard they tried. I talked to them about how all their papers should look "polished" when they pass them in. We talked about what kind of first impression a sloppy paper makes. I mentioned again that papers ripped out of a spiral binder are not acceptable.
Most of the class finished their Fall Haiku. They will be combining this with some Fall decorations. Hopefully, we can finish these early next week. Alex Darnell's mom came in on Thursday morning and did a great art lesson. We appreciate her time. We have a plan for our bulletin board using fall leaves.
The students were great about feeding the "monster" with money for the book fair. I refused to accept money that wasn't supported by you. I think we will be able to purchase a couple more sets for our Literature Circles. Thanks.
Next week will be another busy one. Not only do we have the Fall Festival on Friday, but we also have our "Meet and Greet" with Intel buddies that afternoon. Everyone is really looking forward to it.
Next Tuesday, I will be gone with most of the staff to a "Step Up to Writing" class at the district. I will have a substitute for the whole day.
Please be sure to check your child's Friday folder. Some stuff the papers in their backpacks and return the folder on Monday. A lot of notices get missed.
Have a good weekend. Go Dodgers... oops, go Cubs. ("I don't know" must have been on third !)
October 9, 2015
It's still Friday and I'm actually getting to this newsletter. I appreciate your patience when I don't get it out until
Saturday or Sunday.
It's been a nice week to regroup and catch up on projects. The Explorer Project is due this Monday, and I can't wait to see what they've done with it. It should be interesting and fun.
We started corresponding with our Intel buddies, officially. There were only three who didn't receive mail, but that's been taken care of now. Remember - no correspondence from home.
We just finished Literature Circles, and they are all so amazing. I hope I can keep them in books. There are a couple of new ones that I ordered; they are really enjoying them and want the next ones in the series. That's always a good sign.
Last week the class started narrative essays on a Haunted House. Most everyone finished and wrote some really creative stories. They worked a little on organizing their writing binders. Some still need additional dividers.
The 5th grade teachers thought we wouldn't need to work on handwriting this year, as they have had it on a regular basis for the last two years. Wrong. We decided to add handwriting to their daily work starting Monday. I explained that this was actually a practice sheet and not something to finish quickly and check it off their list. 23 out of 25 said they didn't feel comfortable writing in cursive and would like to do a better job. I was happy to hear they care about it.
Please remember to check out Mrs. Maloney's Teacher Page. She has all the assignments listed, and it will make it easier for the students to double check their upcoming due dates.
Charlotte Doyle is really exciting now, and I think we will be finished with it in the next week or so. I love to listen to them talk about the book and make predictions about what's going to happen next. It's a great book; you may want to read it.
We will be leaving school on Thursday at 11:30 for our field trip on "The Hawaiian Chieftain." We will have "lunch" before we leave. You may want to pack a heavy snack or lunch for them to eat at 10:45. (Many of them actually start eating their lunch at snack time. I think it has to do with play time at lunch recess, but I'm not sure. They may be really hungry.) If they have a day pack (not a big backpack) to take with them, they can carry a water bottle with them. The weather should be pretty warm and a water bottle is recommended. Make sure they wear appropriate shoes and if they have one, a Lake Forest shirt. It should be a great day!
Does anyone know if the Dodgers made it to play-offs?
It's going to be a beautiful weekend, so enjoy.
October 3, 2015
Busy time - that's why I missed last week. Or...I need to work on my time management!? The week was fun, and I enjoyed seeing the "modified" cars yesterday. The rule was I had to see something from the original on their creations. Some decorated, while others were concerned with speed. We'll test them out next week.
You should have received the progress reports in their Friday folders. The goal is to provide you and your child with information that will help make adjustments the remainder of the trimester. Some lower grades may be the result of missing work; other grades made reflect adjusting to new concepts and expectations for the 5th grade year. I want them to work harder and smarter. It takes a little practice after the summer months.
Don't forget the field trip on "The Hawaiian Chieftain" is on October 15th. I have one parent who paid the $35 to chaperone. I apologize for the cost, but that is their policy. Students, teachers, and chaperones are all charged. If you are interested in going, let me know. If you haven't sent in the money for your child, please send it in as soon as you can; or let me know if it's not possible so I can make other arrangements.
We've been doing a lot of writing, and I like the attitude of the class as a whole when I tell them we're starting another essay. If you could send in a couple of notebook dividers for their writing binders, it will help keep the work organized.
We're going to be working on an art project with our buddy class - making "monsters" for the Book Fair. Could you please send in empty paper towel and toilet paper cardboard rolls? We'll be working on this the 16th of October. The class always likes meeting with their buddies.
Explorer presentations will start on Monday, October 12th. Make sure your child practices in front of you or in front of a mirror so they get comfortable with the information.
Some of the students have already heard from their Intel ePal. With their new access to Google mail, they may want to answer the email at home. Please remind them that this must be done in class, so I can check both incoming and outgoing mail.
You've received information about the Dolphin Drive fundraiser. If you can support our school and the PTC, please do so. The PTC makes so many programs possible for your children.
Again, remember that I am available to help students before and after school, if needed. Sometimes, the one on one helps.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
September 18, 2015
It was great to see so many dads with their children this morning. We were all amazed at the turn-out. It meant a lot to the students to have that time with their dads. In October, there will the same event for moms.
Hopefully, everyone is working hard on their Explorer Reports at home. Although we didn't set an exact date, I think presentations will begin on October 12th. That would be a good time because we will be going on the Tall Ship, The Hawaiian Chieftain, on that Thursday, October 15th. I will send the permission slips home next week. But, I do need to get the money for the trip. I have the bus taken care of, but the cost of the sailing is $35 per person. Please send in your donation as soon as possible. If there is a problem with this, please let me know.
We focused briefly on direct objects for our grammar lessons, but there are many elements of grammar on which I need to focus more. Every so often, I give a short quiz to see if they understand. But, I think so much of this is better addressed with the editing of their writing. That's where the real practice and understanding occurs.
In writing, we worked on descriptions. First, they wrote a description of the classroom to someone who has never seen it. Today they wrote descriptions of their bedrooms, with the knowledge that someone would draw the room from their description. They did not put names on their papers, so the only way they know who drew their room is by recognizing it from the picture. I'm eager to see how this works out next week.
Math is going well and next Monday we will be starting Chapter 1. I think all classes have finished the Measurement Unit. Don't forget, if your child runs into a challenging concept, just let me know so I can work with them before or after school.
Some of the students made presentations to other classrooms today about collecting items for all those people who lost their homes to the fires. The firefighters said that school supplies, bandages, wet wipes, and the basic clothing needs would be very helpful. Ask your child if they have an extra box of crayons or markers that they could donate. All supplies need to be turned in by September 30.
Next week, in honor of Lake Forest's 25th Anniversary, there is a celebration at 9:15 on Friday morning, September 25th. There are other activities during the week as well. A flyer with all the information came home today in the Friday Folder.
Please remember to call if you have any concerns.
Do something fun this weekend!
September 11, 2015
It was a short week, so I think this will be a short newsletter. We actually accomplished a lot, but have a few unfinished assignments we need to work on next week.
Most everyone is doing a great job with their editing. As I said before, this can be tedious; some are ready for it and some are suffering through it. All of them are learning. We continue to work on grammar, and they understand the lessons and just have to apply what they know.
We went to the garden on Thursday. Mrs. Backlund does a great job and always has something new for the class to do. We will go once a month during the school year.
We also met with our buddies in Mrs. McMillen's class. They worked together getting a birthday banner ready for Lake Forest's 25th birthday (anniversary) celebration. It's not for two weeks, but Mrs. McMillen and I wanted to do something together. The event should be fun, and I'm sure the finished banner will look great.
Most everyone turned in their timelines today. On Monday, they will present their timelines and talk about the historical events of each year. A lot of them put down items like "60 tornadoes," but will need to give more specific information at the time of their presentation. Remind them to bring their penny boxes to school on Monday.
When we go over our Daily Math, it's clear that some are not reading the problems carefully. When they bring these math sheets home on Friday, go over them with your child. Talk to them about putting each piece of information down on paper so they can understand what is being asked of them. So many times, they just take the numbers and add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Of course, this seldom works. When we go over it together, they clearly see that they didn't read it properly. It will help if you reinforce the importance of slowing down and thinking about the problem. Thanks.
Last week, the class was shown the Angel Food Cake Cutter for the "What is It." I was amazed that so many had no clue what angel food cake was. Today, they got to taste it. I think most everyone liked it. (Is it possible they were just trying to get a snack out of me? It worked!)
I think the weather is going to cool down a bit. Have fun this weekend.
September 4, 2015
Another week - too fast!! I so appreciate this class. They are such hard workers, and they have been so good about all the Chrome Book information that has been coming their way. Some of your children have discovered uses that I was surprised to learn. I know there have been some glitches - some students can't log in, but hopefully we will get that fixed. Tell them not to worry about anything.
In Language Arts, we took a grammar test on subject and object pronouns. They did a great job. We also went through all the steps in writing a five paragraph essay. We took it slowly, one step at a time, and everyone felt good about their progress. Today I moved on to the editing process. This is essential to good writing. We talked about this a lot. Of course, they'd rather be finished with the assignment, but I think they realize the importance of rewriting their work. Next week, we'll finish editing and write the final draft. They put all their writing in a Writing Binder that is kept at school. They keep everything - graphic organizers, articles, rough drafts, etc. in this binder. You may ask them to bring it home anytime you want to check up on this. I like to keep the binder at school, so I can see if the same mistakes are being made with each assignment or if they are improving their skills.
You know they brought home the information about their Explorer Report. Thank you for signing it. It should be fun. This is not a book report. They can use a variety of resources. The due date will be determined after they get a feel for their explorer and have an idea of how long it will take. We'll decide this together.
Most everyone has all their pennies and researched historical events that took place in each year. I have asked them to make a timeline with the dates and a major heading of the event of each year. (I'll provide tag paper.) They will expand on the information at the podium, using a microphone. They will bring back their penny boxes and we will decorate them in class. We will display both the boxes and the timelines. (Why were there so few pennies made in 2009?)
I think all classes took a math test today. They all seemed confident. When we come back on Wednesday, we will start a measurement chapter.
Next week will be a short one for them. We will still have a spelling and vocabulary test on Friday. The math and word of the day will still be required, but they will do two each day. The work with the Greek and Latin roots will be shortened. I plan to have them choose just a few of the activities, rather than completing all of them.
It's suppose to be a beautiful weekend, so enjoy.
August 28, 2015
The week flew by, as they all seem to do. We worked hard, and most everyone is keeping up. Those who sometimes get behind are good about getting everything turned in to me later.
I assigned the reading of my newsletter for homework, because I need to get information about volunteers to the office. Please look at last week's newsletter and let me know if you can help.
I have gone ahead and made reservations for the Tall Ship for October 15th. I haven't got confirmation about the bus yet, but we will leave the school around 11:45 and return to school around 4:15 in the afternoon. I will give you more information as I get everything approved. (I believe we are on the river for 2 1/2 hours or so.)
I also scheduled our Mission to Mars field trip for February 9th. We will leave school about 11:30 and arrive back to school about 3:30. Both of these field trips are wonderful, and I'm so happy you were receptive to having the students experience them. (Please note that both of these trips have us back at school a little late.)
On Monday, everyone participated in their Native American reports. They did a lot of good research, and I learned that we need to continue to work on presenting to an audience. It takes time to feel comfortable, but they will have many opportunities to practice this skill.
We also worked a lot on grammar. They usually appear to understand the rules, but so often fail to transfer that information to their writing. When you look over their papers at home, please remind them to double check their spelling and make sure that proper nouns are capitalized.
They also brought home a short reading/comprehension sheet. This was the first one, and these stories or articles require close reading and more than simple answers to the questions. We will continue to work on these and they should help your child to read a little more carefully and think a little bit more critically.
Math is going well, but we made a few adjustments in groups this week and will make a few more in the coming weeks. It's still difficult for a lot of the students to break down the problems in order to solve them. It takes time; when you work the problem with them, they understand it, but on their own, many still struggle. I will be putting together a problem-solving "notebook" for our class. They all enjoy this and it should reinforce the math skills they need.
Literature Groups are up and running. If you child's group gets a little ambitious about the nightly reading, feel free to tell your child when it's "enough." Just send me an email. I go around and listen to their discussions as well as their reading, and it appears they are enjoying this. If they're frustrated, next time we need to find a better book.
All in all, we're having fun and life is good.

First, I want to thank all of you for attending Back-to-School Night. I am so happy that you are on board with the field trips planned. Now I need to make sure there are no conflicts on the calendar.
If you haven't returned the yellow card or the paperwork from that evening, please send it in Monday. The volunteer forms didn't get much response, so I'm assuming the fingerprinting requirement may be the reason. We still need someone to do Arts Attack once a month, so if you can spare the time, please let me know. Also I had someone sign up for the Class Raffle Basket, but I separated out all the forms and don't know who was willing to do this. We also need someone to head the Fall Festival Class Booth -- any takers? I don't think the class basket or the class booth have the fingerprinting requirement.
Something I didn't mention on Tuesday was putting together a slide show for the end of the year. I like to have this ready for the students at Open House in May. Would someone be willing to do this?
Okay, I'm finished with volunteer concerns. On to the week -- it was great. Everyone worked hard and finished everything.
We started our core novel The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. The days get so busy, we don't get to read as much as we'd like. It's an exciting book and goes along nicely with our upcoming Explorer unit and hopefully our field trip to the Tall Ships.
The class was finishing up their Native American reports today. I can't wait to see the presentations on Monday.
We also assigned Literature Circles and each group chose the book they wanted to read. We'll start the actual reading next week. They are eager to get started.
We are reviewing a lot of basic grammar; it really is an area of the curriculum that needs reviewing. We also went through the elements of good summary writing. It's a genre that will continue to be important all through school. We will work on this often.
Science with Mrs. Maloney takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. A letter came home with your child today. It explains what will be covered in the curriculum.
I'm happy with the math switch. I have a pretty big group, but I have a couple of calculus students coming three days a week to help. Since we started at the end of the math book, when they do the spiral review questions that are in the chapter, they will not understand everything. I've told them not to worry about those few problems; the concepts will be taught as the year goes on. This week, we covered line plots and graphing ordered pairs.
Today we had our pictures taken, and I think everyone liked the new photographers. I'm eager to see the results.
Don't forget to go online and look at them. I think they said it will take about 10 days.
Enjoy your weekend.

It was a great three days. I feel like I won the lottery. What a wonderful class!
We actually hit the ground running; they started working right away
and did a really good job. We talked a lot about expectations - both
theirs and mine. It's going to be a good year.
I was pleased with the writing they did, and I learned a little about what skills need to be the focus as we start the year.
We started a social studies project about the Native American
tribes across the United States. We planned to research in class, but
we had more than our share of glitches with the chrome books. I'm
confident that the technology department will get it all straightened
out. It's hard for them to get everything each teacher needs, loaded
onto the chrome books. The class was so patient, passwords were reset,
and we all got a chance to get some research done this morning.
We had art this afternoon and the results are amazing. You can see the work next Tuesday evening.
On Monday, we will start switching for math. We'll be working on the graphing unit for the next couple of weeks.
Please try to make it to Back-to-School night. I hope to be able to answer all of your questions then.

Welcome to a new school year. I am so excited about this class and look forward to working with you and your child.
I will give you most of the information you need next Tuesday at Back-to-School Night. If you have any questions before then, don't hesitate to stop by and visit.
In the next few days, students are required to cover all textbooks. Brown paper bags or purchased non-adhesive book covers may be used. Book covers need to be replaced as necessary.
I believe the supply list is on-line, but in case you didn't see it, here are a few of the items that will help your child in class:
- scissors
- plastic, zippered pencil holder that fits into a binder
- a 1 inch binder with wide-ruled paper and subject dividers (There is not very much room in the desks.)
- two red correcting pens
- pink, green, and yellow highlighters for editing
- colored pencils
- two sharpened pencils (everyday)
- dry erase marker and eraser
- black fine-tip Sharpie
- two spiral notebooks
- four pocket folders
- $5.00 for the student planner to reimburse the office
There are forms on the website that you will need to fill out before school. There is one that gives your child permission to access Google here at school. Please approve this as I want to work with them using Google Classroom right away. You do not need to check "Bring Your Own Device" as I have Chromebooks available in the classroom.
This year's schedule had a change for the start of school. Class begins at 8:55. The rest of the schedule is the same with recess at 10:40 and lunch at 12:30. You may send a nutritional snack to eat in the morning.
I'm happy to be teaching fifth grade and am ready for an exciting year.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call.
